Barry Mitzman is semi-retired from several occupations, including as a Peabody Award-winning public-television producer and reporter, professor of strategic communications at Seattle University, director of strategic communications at Microsoft Corp., and staff writer at The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. His writing has appeared in various newspapers and magazines including The Guardian, The Nation, Washington Monthly, and PostAlley.org. He is a board member of the Jefferson Land Trust in his hometown of Port Townsend, Washington, where he spends considerable time staring out at the Strait of Juan de Fuca.
